This classic novel from the 19th century has a far more layered perspective on the grotesque 'monster'. In fact, there are many monsters in the novel, of which, the literal monster is quite a sympathetic character. The true meaning of the novel is a romantic notion about the dangers of too much knowledge in the wrong hands. At the time of publication it was given a subtitle of “The Modern Prometheus” in reference to the Greek god Prometheus passing the knowledge of fire to humanity. He was severely punished for doing this and mankind has suffered many tragedies because of fire.

The monster only became a massive factor thanks to the movies that were created about him. The classic Frankenstein's monster is the Boris Karloff version from the 1930's. Many monsters have copied this look to the point of parody in TV shows like the Munsters or cartoons on Halloween ghouls and monsters.

This particular creature reacher costume is very much in the vein of the Boris Karloff monster. He is large and imposing thanks to the oversized latex foam mask that covers the head and shoulders. The monster was supposed to be around 8 feet tall. You might not be that tall but you will still be tall enough to tower over most of the other party goers.

The mask is superbly done. It has the look of the original monster. His head is covered with a rough dark colored hair. The skull top is fixed to the rest of the head by metal clamps around the top. There are also plenty of coarse stitches that keep the skin together in a rough cross stitch pattern. The skin is cracked and wrinkled and has the slightly rotting gangrenous greenish yellow of decaying skin. Charming !

His mouth is open with a half snare grimace to reveal misshapen and rotten teeth. As the mask is a characture of the monster, the cheekbones and ears are elongated to create extra affect. He has different colored eyes, like David Bowie (not that I am saying Bowie is a monster but he has been described as a chameleon at times – always changing his personality – although he has mellowed considerably with age).

The other feature of this creature reacher costume is the oversized arms and hands. These are also latex molded brutish hands with broken shackles on them. They move when you move your hands and allow you to grope people like a true monster should. As the saying goes reach out and touch someone ! After all, the monster was only looking for love, either in his creator or in a companion to share his condition.

The costume is completed by a black undershirt, tattered and torn burlap sack like over shirt and a chain link belt.

This costume is bound to make an impression at any event you decide to go to. Just look at that face for starters. You will certainly hit the right note for Halloween and other creepy themed parties that you go to.
